Love Japanese Style Like We Do
Bring a touch of luck into your life with this wonderful 24k gold plated vintage abacus. A lucky charm from a Japanese Ebisu shrine, this unique piece is said to bring business success and financial prosperity. A unique and stylish addition to your decor that also carries a special meaning.
The lucky charm is from Nishinomiya Ebisu shrine in Osaka. The shrine is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, Ebisu and three others gods. It was constructed by Shotoku Taishi in 600 CE. He prayed to these gods to protect the market in this area. The early Ebisu shrine was located near the shore and Ebisu, worshipped as the kami (god) of the ocean since ancient times, protected the fisherman. Gradually the coastline of Osaka bay moved further west with the shrine becoming famous for its thriving local market. Ebisu became associated more with commerce than fishing due to this thriving market. By the 12th century Ebisu came to be known as the lucky god for merchants and Osaka became a major mercantile center.
This small, but heavy abacus, is an accounting tool that was used by merchants and gold
has long represented great wealth; the perfect combination for a lucky charm to enhance business prosperity. The abacus amulet comes in its original wooden box with a purple wrapping cloth printed in silver with the shrine’s crest. The name of the shrine, and high quality lucky abacus is written on the box lid. The abacus is in good vintage condition with some tarnishing.
