Love Japanese Style Like We Do
An antique Japanese iron (hinoshi) with an enshrined metal figure of Daikoku, one of the seven lucky gods of Japan. A great omamori (lucky amulet), with a lovely folk craft feel, to bring good luck and protection to your home.
Hinoshi were old folk tools used to iron kimono. The heavy bronze pot at the base of the wooden handle was filled with hot coals from the hibachi. It was also used to transport hot coals from one hibachi to another. These old irons can be seen in kimono sewing books up until the 1920's after which they were replaced by electric irons.
Enshrined in the hinoshi pot sits an old metal money box, in the shape of Daikoku. Daikoku was considered the lucky god of agriculture and the god of wealth. In the past, a good rice harvest meant great wealth, so Daikoku was a great choice of engimono for farmers and merchants. The cheerful, chubby god stands on two big bales of rice and has a large bag full of gold coins, representing great wealth, slung over his shoulder. He holds a magic mallet which when shaken is said to bring wish fulfillment.
The hinoshi has signs of everyday use. The pot is slightly bent and has the darkened patina of age. The handle has dents and scratches. It has the great rustic feel of old Japanese folk tools.
Daikoku was one of the gods placed in farm house kitchens. The metal money box has darkened in color from the soot of the old wood stove. It’s original gold color can be seen at the back. It is in good structural condition, with some rusting on the base. The round cover at the base is difficult to screw open.
Hang this item in your entrance to bring great luck, wealth and protection into your home!
