kamidana shinto prayer tools, brass shingu
kamidana shinto prayer tools, brass shingu
Love Japanese Style Like We Do
An old set of brass Shingu; shinto tools placed on the kamidana and used for prayer and other special ceremonies.
Included in the set are a pair of kagari-bi, traditional candle holders, a pair of sakaki- tate, vases for displaying sasaki tree branches, a pair of heishi, bottles for offering sake and a pair of sanpo, trays for offering rice and salt to the kami (god).
These old tools have signs of use and the brass has darkened considerably over time, adding to their antique appeal, and lending them to display with old kamidana shrines.
There is a dent in the back of one of the sake bottles and both have something inside which rattles when shaken. (They were probably used as flower vases and have some small twigs inside). The sanpo trays are hand made and one of the trays has slight movement at the joint between the tray and stand on one side. This aside they are still in good condition for use and make a nice display item.
- candle holders measure 10 cm (4”) tall x 3.5 cm (1.4”) across.
- vases measure 10.5 cm (4.1”) tall x 6.5 cm (2.6”) across.
- sake bottles measure 12 cm (4.7”) tall x 6 cm (2.4”) across.
- offering trays measures 8.5 cm (3.3”) tall x 10 cm (4”) across.
- total weight 1,300 gm.

SHINTO RELIGION IN BRIEF
Shinto is Japan’s own religion that started with Emperor Gimmu in BC 600s. Shinto is worshipping nature and worshiping ancestors. Everything has a spirit and humans have a good nature. Evil spirits are kept away by praying and giving offerings to the higher level spirits. The most important deity is the Sun-god Amaterasu.
Important values are ritual purity, sincerity, animism (mountains and rivers have spirits, people become spirits, words have spirits), presence (no life after death), the imperial family is sacred, nature should be preserved and worshipped, people with grudges become evil spirits, festivals are important and a must for social harmony and a good harvest.
