MOKUGYO
The mokugyo is a wooden percussion instrument used in Buddhism. Traditionally the instrument is in the shape of two fish joined. Being rounded and hollow, it’s shape is similar to a jingle bell. When struck with a mallet the mokugyo emits a hypnotic type sound and the sound can vary depending on the type of wood and how hollow the fish is. Small mokugyo are placed on a cushion to ensure a pleasant sound.
Usually the mokugyo has carved fish scales on top and bottom. The handle is formed from symbolized fish heads joined at the mouth by a sacred pearl. The pearl symbolizes unity.
Sometimes a mokugyo is called the ‘Wakeful Drum’ as it keeps those meditating awake and alert. The fish symbolise a wakeful mind as it was thought that fish never sleep because they never close their eyes.
A mokugyo is used in temples for reciting sutras or mantras, when reciting Nembutsu, or for breathing and mindfulness sessions. It is also used during rituals for death or rebirth, during processions, to keep alertness when people chant, to keep time for chanting and for prayers for rain or auspicious blessings.
