Love Japanese Style Like We Do

An old Japanese orin set from a Buddhist temple. Very large orin, like this, are placed for prayer and worship in the temple Hondo, or main hall, where the object of worship is enshrined.

The set includes an orin (singing bowl), a marukindai (stand), a zabuton (cushion), and a rinbo (striker).

The orin is made from beaten bronze and remnants of the hammer marks can be seen in places. The bowl is a dark reddish brown color on the outside and black on the  inside. A very large piece, it rings with a nice low resonance, continuing to reverberate for quite some time. The orin is in good vintage condition with signs of use and wear. It is signed by the maker.

The marukindai stand is made of wood and is covered in a deep reddish brown lacquer which has dulled over the years, giving it a nice warm feel. Cabriole legs, attached to a round base,  support the stand. A scalloped frill, cut outs and black lacquer accents add to the grandeur of the piece. The stand is in good vintage condition with some knocks and scratches to the lacquer finish.

The orin sits on a zabuton made of patchwork red, purple and dark gold brocade. There is a yellow tassel in the center.  The cushion is a solid piece and supports the orin well. It is in very good condition.

The wooden rinbo has a reddish brown painted handle and the striking section is covered in a soft suede. The handle has scratches and dents from hitting the rim of the bronze bowl and the suede has darkened in color and is marked.

A lovely old buddhist temple item, with a great vintage feel that makes a beautiful piece for use in meditation, yoga and relaxation routines.

- orin measures 28 cm (11.02) in diameter at the rim x  21 cm (8.3”) high.

ORIN GONGS
Japanese Buddhist singing bowls are called, ‘Orin’ or ‘Orin Gongs.’ They are used for prayer and worship in Japanese temples. In temples the orin gong is used with a small hand bell, a set of gongs and a stone or metal plate.  Small orin are used at homes for private altars (Butsudan). Orin are placed on colorful cushions called zabuton.

Orin gongs come in a variety of sizes. Generally the bigger the bowl is, the deeper the sound becomes.  Traditionally orin were used to accompany chanting and meditation.  Nowadays they are used for the same purpose and also for music making and meditation  as well as for relaxation and personal well-being. They have become popular with music therapists and sound healers, yoga and meditation practitioners.
