Crafted from kiri (paulownia) wood, this vase is a fine example of Kanazawa’s rich heritage of woodcraft, hailing from Ishikawa Prefecture. The tradition dates back to the 1890s, when the region became known for producing paulownia braziers and later expanded into decorative items. Kiri is prized not only for its striking wood grain and lightweight feel, but also for its natural resistance to heat, humidity, and insects.
The vase features a deep, dark brown finish with a beautifully textured grain that adds depth and character. Makie lacquer work in gold, red, and green tones - with a subtle accent of shimmering mother-of-pearl - depicts a sweet little bird perched among leaves and a blooming flower. The design is both whimsical and refined, standing out against the rich wooden background. Tall and cylindrical, the vase tapers slightly at the mouth and includes a copper insert for holding water and fresh flowers.
Condition:
Very good vintage condition with only a small area of wear at the rim - barely noticeable and not at all distracting from its overall charm.
