Love Japanese Style Like We Do

An antique Japanese Buddhist statue of Dainichi Nyorai, the main deity in Japanese Shingon Buddhism and the one who embodies a life force that illuminates and pervades all things.

Dainichi Nyorai is surrounded by an almond-shaped aureole of light, or mandorla, covered in carved cloud motifs. The Bodhisattva is seated on a lotus flower and wears silk robes, a necklace and armlets extending from his five-wisdom crown.

The gold gilt, wooden statue is hand carved from Japanese cypress wood. It is a larger piece, from the Meiji-Taisho era. The gold color has darkened with age and the metal accessories are tarnished with slight bends. Overall the statue is in good structural condition, with signs of wear, small scratches and dents in the lacquer work.

A nice piece of Buddhist art and a great addition to a meditation space or religious collection.

- measures 38.5 cm (15.1”) tall x 19 cm (7.5”) wide x 13 cm (5.1”) deep.
- weighs 800 gm.

DAINICHI NYORAI
Occupying the highest rank in the Japanese Buddhist pantheon, Dainichi Nyorai is the chief deity in Shingon Buddhism. Dainichi, meaning ‘great sun,’ is the one from which all things emanate, the one who embodies all things, the one who represents the unity of all things.

Dainichi is represented in the form of Bodhisattva (buddah-to-be). He is seated, wearing silk robes and accessories such as armlets, a necklace and bracelets. He also wears a five-wisdom bejewelled crown on his head, symbolizing his identity with the Five Buddha (Gobutsu) and the five wisdoms attributed to them; wisdom against anger, envy, desire, ignorance, and pride.

His hands, although not always, are held in the wisdom fist mudra with the clenched right hand over the extended index finger of the clenched left hand. The fingers of the right hand embody the five elements of the material realm and embrace the left index finger, symbolizing the Buddhist essence of the spiritual realm.
