Love Japanese Style Like We Do

Invite a touch of folklore and good fortune into your home with this charming antique ceramic tanuki (raccoon dog) figurine. Expertly hand-molded and rich with character, this delightful piece features the iconic tanuki in a rare and whimsical pose - seated comfortably while grinding food with a traditional Japanese mortar (suribachi) and pestle (surikogi). A true collector's gem, it’s a captivating take on a beloved figure from Japanese folklore.

The tanuki has long been cherished in Japanese culture, evolving from a mischievous shapeshifter into a symbol of prosperity, good luck, and jovial mischief. Often associated with wealth and success in business, this playful figure is a familiar sight outside shops and homes - offering not just charm, but blessings too.

Dating to the early Showa Era (1940s), this figurine is crafted from a light bisque clay. The tanuki sits on his haunches, tail curled snugly around his body, securing the mortar between his feet as he grinds away with a serene, almost spacey expression. His rich brown hues contrast beautifully with the warm yellow pestle and the soft interior tones of the mortar, creating a harmonious and earthy palette.

While the exact symbolism of the suribachi in this context is open to interpretation, its traditional association with nourishment and preparation may underscore the tanuki’s role as a bringer of abundance. Together, these elements create a layered symbol of provision and prosperity.

The figurine remains in good antique condition, free from cracks or chips. A slight wobble - typical of kiln firing techniques from the era - adds to its authentic character and does not affect display.

This endearing tanuki makes for a meaningful addition to any collection - full of folklore, personality, and charm. A truly unique piece that’s sure to bring a smile, and perhaps a little extra luck, wherever it’s placed.

- measures around 19 cm (7.4") tall x 23 cm (9") across x 15 cm (5.9") deep.
- weighs 1300 gm.
