Love Japanese Style Like We Do

Step into a world of history and artistry with this stunning antique folk art large stoneware serving plate. A true vintage treasure, this piece offers a rare glimpse into the artistry of the Edo and Meiji eras, capturing the essence of a bygone time.

Crafted as everyday ware by skilled artisans during these two influential periods, this stoneware plate, or ishizara, reflects the heart of Japanese provincial craftsmanship. These humble yet beautiful pieces were created for the common folk, serving both practical and aesthetic purposes in daily life.

Throughout Japan, small potting centers catered to the needs of the people, producing durable and reliable kitchenware like bowls, plates, and pots. In contrast to the refined porcelain reserved for the elite or exported abroad, these folk art kilns created everyday items that were functional, yet full of character. These wares were once overlooked until the Mingei (folk art) movement was founded in 1926 by Soetsu Yanagi, alongside influential potters Shoji Hamada and Kanjiro Kawai. The movement celebrated the beauty found in simple, utilitarian objects crafted by anonymous hands in harmony with nature.

This striking plate embodies the spirit of Mingei: crafted for everyday use yet possessing an undeniable beauty in its simplicity. Made to endure, it’s a substantial, thick piece, showcasing the lovely pale yellow hue of Kiseto ware. Its subtle cracks in the glaze, slight discoloration from years of use, and the occasional kiln imperfection only enhance its rustic charm and character. The slightly uneven shape adds to its hand-crafted allure, making it a truly unique find.

The underside of the plate is glazed, with the foot left unglazed to prevent the melting glaze from bonding to the kiln shelf - another testament to the care that went into its creation.

In wonderful condition for its age, the plate shows only modest signs of wear, with no cracks and minimal chip damage to the rim, preserving its authenticity and history.

This versatile piece serves as a lovely display item, a charming plate for fruits or food, or even as a captivating tray to showcase precious ornaments in your kitchen or dining area.
