Love Japanese Style Like We Do
Add a touch of Japanese charm to your home with these quaint antique metal money boxes in the shape of the lucky gods Ebisu and Daikoku. Perfect for bringing a unique cultural vibe to your home decor or as a thoughtful gift for collectors. A wonderful decorative accent for lovers of antique treasures.
These gods were referred to as the ‘Kitchen Gods,’ as they were usually displayed on the kamidana (god shelf) in the kitchen of old traditional country homes. Both belonging to the ‘Seven Lucky Gods’ of Japan, they ensure a household will always have plentiful food, lots of money and good fortune.
The money boxes are made of a quite heavy cast metal with fine attention to detail. Originally gold, they have the lovely darkened patina of age, a result of the soot from the woos stove in the kitchen. There is a slit at the back for putting in money and a screw cover at the base for taking out the savings. Daikoku and Ebisu are written in Japanese script on the back of each god.
The money boxes are in good antique condition with some surface scratches and wear, but no splits in the metal work.
A great addition to a money box collection!
- 1 god measures 8.5 cm (3.3”) tall x 5 cm (2”) across x 5 cm (2”) deep.
- total weight 330 gm.

KITCHEN GODS-EBISU AND DAIKOKU
Ebisu and Daikoku are known as the lucky kitchen gods. They were placed on a shelf high up in the kitchen and given daily offerings to bring good fortune into the home.
Ebisu is known as the God of commerce and prosperity, the ocean and fishing. He is the guardian of all occupations. He holds a fishing rod in one hand and a big snapper under the other arm. A red snapper is eaten at all happy events in Japan. He wears a pointed hat and sits on a rock. Ebisu will make sure you always have plenty of money, success and food.
Daikoku is the God of wealth and good fortune, and of farmers and food. He is a cheerful, chubby God, standing on bales of rice. He has a sack of treasure slung over one shoulder and a magic mallet, that fulfills all wishes, in the other hand. Put him in your home and you will always have good fortune, money and lots of food.
