Love Japanese Style Like We Do

A nice Japanese orin set from a Buddhist temple. The set includes a zabuton (cushion), an orin (singing bowl) and a rinbo (striker). Orin like this are placed on the offering table, for prayer and worship, in the temple Hondo, or main hall, where the object of worship is enshrined.

The orin is made from beaten bronze, with hammer marks creating a simple, random dot pattern around the lower part of the bowl. It is a medium sized, quite heavy bowl and rings with a beautiful higher pitched resonance, continuing to reverberate for quite some time. The burnished brown singing bowl was used in a temple for daily prayer and has signs of wear. There are patches inside and outside and around the rim, where the dark brown color has rubbed off revealing a lighter bronze color beneath and giving the piece a comforting warmth. There are no dents in the bowl. Candle wax marks can be seen on the inside of the orin.

The orin sits on a zabuton made of patchwork red, royal blue and gold brocade. There is a red tassel in the center. The cushion is a solid piece and holds the heavy orin nicely. It is in very good condition.

The wooden rinbo has a reddish brown lacquered handle and the striking section is covered in a soft suede. The handle has scratches and dents from hitting the rim of the bronze bowl and the suede has darkened in color and is marked.

A lovely Buddhist temple piece that makes a great item for use in meditation, yoga and relaxation routines.

- orin measures 18 cm (7.1”) in diameter at the rim x 13 cm (5.1”) high.
- zabuton measures 22 cm (8.7”) in diameter.
- rinbo measures 24 cm (9.4”) long.
- weighs 1,410 gm.

ORIN GONGS
Japanese Buddhist singing bowls are called, ‘Orin’ or ‘Orin Gongs.’ They are used for prayer and worship in Japanese temples. In temples, the orin gong is used with a small hand bell, a set of gongs and a stone or metal plate. Small orin are used at homes for private altars (Butsudan). Orin are placed on colorful cushions called zabuton.

Orin gongs come in a variety of sizes. Generally the bigger the bowl is, the deeper the sound becomes. Traditionally orin were used to accompany chanting and meditation. Nowadays they are used for the same purpose and also for music making and meditation as well as for relaxation and personal well-being. They have become popular with music therapists and sound healers, yoga and meditation practitioners.
