Love Japanese Style Like We Do
Bring the tranquility of a Buddhist temple into your home with this exquisite large vintage orin resting on a luxurious brocade cushion atop a striking red lacquer stand. Perfect for meditation, yoga and relaxation routines, it creates a peaceful ambiance that will elevate your home or studio.
In Buddhist temples, such large orins are traditionally placed in the Hondo (main hall) for prayer and worship, where they help to focus the mind and spirit. This set includes the orin (singing bowl), a marukindai (stand), a zabuton (cushion), and a rinbo (striker) - each piece crafted with care and steeped in tradition.
Orin (Singing Bowl)
The beautiful orin is finely made of beaten bronze and remnants of the hammer marks can be seen on the outside. The bowl is a dark reddish brown color on the outside and inside. An older bowl it has a lovely smooth and shiny patina on the outside. The inside has some pitted areas and touches of green tarnish. There is some candle wax remnants on both the inside and outside. A larger piece, it rings with a nice low resonance, continuing to reverberate for quite some time. The orin is in good vintage condition with signs of use and wear, but no dents.
Marukindai (Stand)
The hand crafted marukindai stand, made from rich, natural wood, features a stunning reddish-brown lacquer that has deepened over the years, developing a warm, inviting patina. The stand's graceful cabriole legs rise from a round base, offering elegant support for the orin. Intricate scalloped edges, detailed cutouts, and delicate gold accents further elevate its grandeur. While the stand carries the charm of age, with minor knocks, scratches, and slight lacquer peeling, these imperfections only serve to enhance its character and history. As with many of these precision-cut stands, which are created without the use of glue, the wood has naturally shrunk over time, causing a slight separation at the base. This does not impact its functionality but please handle with care, or consider securing it with glue for added stability.
Zabuton (Cushion)
The zabuton cushion is a beautiful piece in its own right, featuring a patchwork design of purple silk and red brocade with intricate dark gold floral embroidery. At the center, a red tassel adds a touch of elegance. This sturdy cushion provides solid support for the orin, ensuring it sits securely while adding an extra layer of luxury to the display. The cushion is in very good condition.
Rinbo (Striker)
This vintage rinbo striker, handcrafted from a natural branch of wood, exudes a rustic charm. Its irregular form is a testament to its organic origins, while the smooth texture, worn down by years of use and the oils from countless hands, gives it a unique, tactile appeal. The bottom is encased in hand-sewn leather, which has darkened over time, developing a beautiful patina. The leather bears a small slit at the top, adding to the striker's character and history.
Add a touch of spirituality, serenity, and timeless beauty to your home decor with this rare and striking orin set. It’s also an ideal size for use in meditation classes or workshops, making it a wonderful gift for those who appreciate both form and function.

ORIN GONGS
Japanese Buddhist singing bowls are called, ‘Orin’ or ‘Orin Gongs.’ They are used for prayer and worship in Japanese temples. In temples the orin gong is used with a small hand bell, a set of gongs and a stone or metal plate. Small orin are used at homes for private altars (Butsudan). Orin are placed on colorful cushions called zabuton.
Orin gongs come in a variety of sizes. Generally the bigger the bowl is, the deeper the sound becomes. Traditionally orin were used to accompany chanting and meditation. Nowadays they are used for the same purpose and also for music making and meditation as well as for relaxation and personal well-being. They have become popular with music therapists and sound healers, yoga and meditation practitioners.
