Love Japanese Style Like We Do

Transform your space with the tranquil charm of this exquisite vintage Japanese sugi wood table lamp, inspired by the serene beauty of mountain huts. Crafted from premium Akita sugi wood, this lamp perfectly blends rustic elegance with the warmth of nature, creating a peaceful atmosphere in any room. Ideal for cozy living rooms, serene mountain retreats, or as a unique statement piece, its soft glow invites comfort and calm.

Made by the renowned Odate Kogeisha company in the Showa era (around the 1960s), this lamp celebrates the timeless craftsmanship of Japan. The wood, sourced from the Akita forests - one of Japan’s most prized cedar-growing regions - showcases a stunning grain that enhances the lamp’s natural beauty. The traditional design draws from Japan's deep connection with nature, offering both rustic charm and quiet elegance.

The lamp features a delightful miniature mountain hut perched on a rectangular wooden base. Attached to the base is a light chamber that represents the living area of the hut. Each side of the hut has intricately cut-out windows, lined with delicate shoji paper, allowing the light to filter through with a soft, diffused glow. The removable thatched roof section reveals the globe light, making it easy to replace the bulb. A switch-equipped electric cord extends from the side of the base, ready for use in both Japan and America (international buyers may need an adapter).

In very good antique condition, the lamp’s wood has developed a beautiful darkened patina over the years, with a smooth, velvety texture that speaks to its age and craftsmanship. The shoji paper has been thoughtfully replaced to preserve the lamp's authenticity.

In Japanese culture, the humble thatched hut, or kuzuya, embodies the aesthetic of wabi-sabi - an appreciation for the beauty found in age, imperfection, and simplicity. This lamp brings that peaceful, timeless sensibility into your home, evoking feelings of tranquility, solitude, and the quiet joy of nature. Let the gentle glow of this unique piece infuse your living space with a serene, meditative atmosphere that honors both tradition and craftsmanship.

WABI SABI
Wabi sabi is the beauty of imperfect things. In Japan, wabi sabi is imperceptible but everywhere: a crack on a teapot, the wood of an old door, green moss on a rock, a misty landscape, a distorted cup or the reflection of the moon on a pond.

The idea of wabi sabi is the contemplation of something that becomes more beautiful as it ages, fades, and consequently acquires a new charm.

Sabi means the delightful contemplation of what is old and worn; the beauty of faded or withered things; things old but  elegant; being rusty, all with the impression of peacefulness.

Wabi can mean loneliness or melancholy, the appreciation of a serene life, far from the urban hustle and bustle. It is an aesthetic sensibility closely related to the tea ceremony, referring to the general atmosphere and the objects used during this formal service.

As a sensitivity that leads to happiness, and an acceptance of the beauty of simple and natural things, wabi sabi is a daily way to experience little joys. When admiring a landscape, an object, or a painting, during a conversation with friends or when sharing a moment with a good company, everyone can feel the notion of wabi sabi.
