Love Japanese Style Like We Do

Bring timeless elegance and natural beauty into your space with this exquisite stand, handcrafted from rare burled Chinese quince wood. Designed to showcase bonsai, suiseki viewing stones, treasured ornaments, or seasonal flower arrangements, this piece adds a refined touch to any setting.

Native to China and cherished for centuries, the Chinese quince tree has deep roots in both Chinese and Japanese history. Once prized for its medicinal properties and symbolic fruit, it found a beloved place in Japanese gardens during the Heian and Edo periods. Known in Japan as Karin, its wood has long been revered for its use in high-end traditional crafts - from Buddhist altars and musical instruments to go bowls and ornate furnishings.

This luxurious wood is celebrated for its rich hues - golden mustard yellow, warm orange, and soft light browns - along with its intricate grain patterns and natural luster. The burl, a distinctive and rare growth formed from dormant bud tissue, produces swirling, organic shapes that make each piece entirely unique.

This one-of-a-kind stand is crafted from a horizontal cross-section of the quince burl, determining its stunning natural shape and markings. The surface features a striking contrast: a warm golden outer ring surrounds a deeper, reddish-brown center, all brought to life by a hand-applied, translucent lacquer finish that enhances the wood’s stunning grain and coloration. The preserved bark edge, a shade of dark brown adds a wonderful final accent.

In good vintage condition, the stand exhibits only light surface scuffing. As is typical of natural wood forms, there is a subtle wobble; however, it remains stable and fully functional for display purposes. A crack extends from the natural hole on the side of the wood, which appears to have been present in the raw material used to craft the stand.

Originally created to highlight bonsai or suiseki stones, this rare stand also offers an elegant stage for a cherished ornament or a vase of fresh flowers. A truly hard-to-find piece, it makes a distinctive addition to any refined interior or collector’s display.
