Love Japanese Style Like We Do

Elevate your space with this exquisite vintage silk tapestry, woven in the prestigious Aya Nishijin-ori technique and elegantly mounted on a traditional shikishi art board. With its radiant gold accents and vibrant silk threads, this piece is both a decorative treasure and a tribute to exceptional Japanese craftsmanship.

A woven interpretation of Yuri (Playful Carp) by nihonga artist Sekijo Yamashita, the design features two koi swimming across a luminous field of golden silk. The upper koi is yellow-white with orange and black markings; the lower is white with vivid red-orange patches. Their gentle forms suggest calm, flowing movement, set against a richly textured gold background. A red artist’s seal appears in the lower corner.

In Japanese symbolism, koi represent perseverance, ambition, and spiritual transformation - said to become dragons after swimming upstream, they embody triumph through adversity.

The tapestry showcases Aya Nishijin-ori, a revered Kyoto weaving tradition dating back to the 5th century, known for its intricate patterns using silk, gold thread, and gilt paper. Still used in high-end kimono, Noh costumes, and fine interiors, it reflects centuries of refined artistry.

Mounted on a shikishi board - traditionally used to display poetry, calligraphy, and seasonal art - the piece honors Japanese display customs. It’s presented in very good vintage condition, protected by a folded paper sleeve and clear wrap, and comes with a printed artist profile and introduction to Aya Nishijin-ori (in Japanese).

This elegant artwork serves as both a refined accent and a symbolic talisman, offering blessings of:
- Success through effort.
- Harmony and fortune.
- Calm and spiritual growth.

Display Tip:
Pair with a handcrafted shikishi frame to enhance its presence. Framing allows for easy seasonal rotation, true to Japanese aesthetic tradition.

- measures 242 mm (9.5”) x 272 mm (10.7”).

SHIKISHI BOARDS
Shikishi boards are made from fine handmade washi paper laminated to a hard board backing. They are edged with a strip of gold paper and are used for sumi-e paintings, haiku poems, calligraphy and watercolor paintings. There are also silk screen and printed shikishi too. The regular size measures 242 mm (9.52”) x 272 mm (10.7”). Lately a mini size, measuring 120 mm (4.73”) x 135 mm (5.32”) has also become popular.

Traditional shikishi art is based around the seasons and seasonal events. Paintings of flowers, animals, fish, vegetables, lucky images, events, such as Hina Matsuri. boys day, bean throwing day and New Year can be found. Japanese people rotate around the paintings to reflect the season, making a display to keep themselves in touch with the beauty of nature and yearly festivities, from within their own home.

Japanese shikishi were traditionally attached to a hanging scroll and displayed in the tokonoma of a formal Japanese tatami mat room. Recently people do not have a tokonoma so some lovely frames for shikishi have become available. They still give you the option to change around your art according to the seasons and also give you the freedom to make a display in any room you like.
